Mama Rita: Inmates ‘are not the crimes they did’

LOS ANGELES — Some prisoners call her “brutal” because she asks the hard questions. At least one calls her “the surgeon” because “she breaks our hearts and then heals them back together.” But most inmates she visits simply call her “Mama Rita.”
